How to use a feelings chart

  1. Make it a morning check-in. Put the chart where your child sees it each morning, like the fridge or the back of a door.
  2. Point to a face. Ask “How are you feeling today?” and let your child point to a face or circle it. There is no need to talk about it unless they want to.
  3. Ask “How big is it, 1 to 5?” Colour in the steps on the strip. A small worry and a big one may need different things from you.
  4. Pick one Calmling to try. The “What helps?” band has three: Breatho (big slow breath), Flutterhug (butterfly hug) and Stompo (stomp it out). Try one together.
  5. Finish the line. “I feel … when …” can be said out loud, written in or drawn.

Printing tips

  1. Print at 100% (actual size), double-sided, and flip on the long edge, so every card gets its Calmlings back.
  2. Page 1 is the card fronts and page 2 their backs. Page 3 (“How are you feeling today?”) starts a sheet of its own.
  3. No double-sided printing? Print page 1, put the sheet back in the tray, then print page 2.
  4. Cut along the short grey marks at the edges of the page. Thin card is sturdier than paper.

Laminate the chart and use a dry-wipe pen, and the strip and the line can be filled in again each day. Both PDFs are free: enter your email above and the download opens straight away.

Questions about feelings charts

Is the feelings chart free?

Yes. Enter your email and the download opens straight away, with A4 and US Letter PDFs. We keep your email address to tell you about new free printables now and then, and delete it whenever you ask.

Can I print it for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as your class needs. Page 1 is the card fronts and page 2 their backs, and the chart has a page of its own.

What is the difference between a feelings chart and emotion cards?

A feelings chart puts every feeling on one page, so a child can point to one. Emotion cards give each feeling a card of its own, to hold up, sort or play games with. This pack has both: the chart and six cards. See all 26 emotion cards.

Is a feelings chart the same as a feelings wheel?

They do the same job in different shapes. A feelings wheel puts feelings in a circle, with a few big ones in the middle and more exact words around the edge. A chart like this one gives each feeling a face, so a child who can’t read the words yet can still point.

Is this therapy?

No. Calmlings cards are educational tools, not therapy or medical advice. Every child is different, so use the cards in whatever way works, alongside the doctors, therapists and teachers who know them.
