Every feeling on the cards

26 Feelings Friends, one creature for each feeling. Cards marked Free are in the free feelings chart pack. Cards marked Starter Set come in the US$5 Starter Set, with the free ones. All 26 come in the Complete Collection.

The Quiverpip (scared) card, showing its name, body clue, How big? meter, calming moves and write-in line

What is on each card

Take Quiverpip, the Feelings Friend for scared. Every Feelings Friend card has the same five parts.

  1. The feeling’s name. “Scared”, with a creature drawn for that feeling.
  2. A body clue. “My heart beats fast and I shiver.” It gives a child words for where a feeling shows up in their body.
  3. A “How big?” meter from 1 to 5. Your child points to how big the feeling is right now.
  4. Two Calmlings to try. Quiverpip’s panel says “What helps: Blanketbear · Breatho”. Most cards say “What helps”. On Beamlet, the Feelings Friend for happy, it says “Share it with” instead.
  5. A write-in line. “I feel scared when …” for your child, or you, to finish.

Print them on thin card. If you laminate a set, a dry-wipe pen lets your child fill in the meter and the line again and again.

Ways to use emotion cards

A few simple games. None of them needs more than the cards and a few minutes.

  1. A morning check-in. Lay out four or five cards. Your child points to the one that fits today. There is no need to talk about it unless they want to.
  2. How big is it? Once a feeling has a name, ask for a number from 1 to 5. A small worry and a big one may need different things from you.
  3. Act it out. One person shows a feeling with their face and body. Everyone else guesses which card it is. Then swap.
  4. Feelings pairs. Print two copies, turn them face down and play a memory game. Say the feeling out loud when you find a pair.
  5. Find what helps. After naming a feeling, look at the two Calmlings on its card, and try one together.

For more games that practise naming feelings, see our emotions activities for kids.

From naming a feeling to trying something

A Feelings Friend names the feeling. A Calmling is one thing to try next. Feelio sits in between: its card asks your child to say the feeling out loud. Then turn to the Calmlings on the feeling’s card: Quiverpip points to Blanketbear and Breatho.

  • Each card is 88 mm (3.5 in) tall: a good size for a ring, a pocket chart or a calm corner wall.
